Zamfara Police Neutralise Notorious Bandit Leader, Arrest Three Suspects in Anti-Banditry Operation

The Zamfara State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against banditry, neutralising a notorious bandit leader, arresting three suspected accomplices, and recovering arms and motorcycles during a coordinated operation in Gummi Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), led by the Divisional Police Officer of Bukkuyum Division, CSP Usman Halilu Modibbo, carried out the operation on June 9, 2026, following credible intelligence reports that armed bandits had been sighted on the outskirts of Birisawa village in Gummi LGA.

The police team reportedly engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle upon arriving at the location. During the exchange, the leader of the bandit group was neutralised, while three suspects were arrested. Several other members of the gang escaped into a nearby forest with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

The Command disclosed that operatives subsequently destroyed the gang's hideout and recovered five motorcycles and three firearms believed to have been used in criminal activities.

The police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and deny bandits safe havens from which they launch attacks against communities.

DSP Abubakar added that efforts are underway to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

"The Zamfara State Police Command remains committed to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of all residents of the state," the statement read.

The Command reaffirmed its determination to intensify the fight against banditry and other violent crimes across Zamfara State.
