Wizkid Makes History: First African Artist to Hit 14 Million Equivalent Album Sales Worldwide

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has once again etched his name into the annals of music history. According to data from music analytics platform ChartMasters, the “Starboy” has become the first African artist to surpass 14 million equivalent album sales (CSPC units) globally, solidifying his position as the continent’s best-selling artist of all time.

As of early June 2026, Wizkid’s cumulative figures stand at approximately 14.015 million equivalent album units. This metric accounts for pure album sales, digital downloads, physical singles, and streaming equivalents across his entire catalog.  He edges out fellow Nigerian Burna Boy (around 13.87–13.88 million) and stands far ahead of other African acts in this modern consumption-based ranking.

Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid emerged from the streets of Lagos in the late 2000s and quickly rose to become the face of Afrobeats’ international breakthrough. His 2016 feature on Drake’s “One Dance” was a watershed moment — the track became Spotify’s first song to reach one billion streams and helped introduce Afrobeats to mainstream Western audiences.

Key milestones in his commercial journey include:

•  Made in Lagos (2020): His biggest solo project, certified Gold in the US and UK, with the hit single “Essence” (featuring Tems) achieving multi-platinum status in the United States.

•  Massive streaming numbers: Over 11 billion Spotify streams as a lead artist and total credits exceeding 27 billion on-demand audio streams.

•  Chart-topping collaborations and solo hits like “Joro,” “Come Closer,” and tracks from his 2024 album Morayo.

ChartMasters’ CSPC methodology converts streams into album equivalents (typically 1,500 streams = 1 album unit in many markets), providing a standardized view of an artist’s true consumption footprint. Wizkid’s ranking places him among top global R&B acts, around #27 on their all-time lists for the genre.

While older-generation African legends like Algeria’s Cheb Khaled have reported higher claimed pure sales figures in different eras (often 70–80+ million), Wizkid’s achievement reflects the streaming-dominated reality of 21st-century music consumption. His success has paved the way for a new generation of Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Davido, Rema, and Tems, elevating African music on global platforms.

Fans and industry observers have celebrated the feat across social media, hailing Wizkid as “Africa’s Best-Selling Artist” and a pioneer who turned Afrobeats into a worldwide commercial force. The milestone comes amid continued growth for the genre, with Afrobeats artists filling stadiums, topping Billboard charts, and securing major brand deals.
