A viral video showing a suspected bandit operating what appears to be an anti-aircraft weapon has sparked renewed concerns over the proliferation of sophisticated arms among criminal groups in Nigeria.
The 72-second footage, shared on social media by commentator Somto Okonkwo, captures a man believed to be a bandit casually handling the heavy weapon in what appears to be a residential environment, with laundry visible on nearby walls.
The video has reignited public debate about the scale of insecurity in parts of the country and the ease with which armed groups reportedly gain access to advanced weapons. Security analysts have repeatedly raised concerns about the influx of illegal arms through Nigeria’s porous borders, warning that such weapons continue to fuel violence across several regions.
Bandit groups, particularly in northwestern states such as Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and parts of Kaduna, have been linked to attacks on communities, cattle rustling, mass abductions, and other violent crimes that have displaced thousands of residents.
The footage has also generated mixed reactions regarding the government's efforts to address the security challenge. Officials have claimed that thousands of bandits have been neutralised and several kidnapped victims rescued through ongoing counter-banditry operations.
