US Unveils Global Campaign Against Far-Left Extremism, Draws Parallels With Fight Against Jihadist Terrorism

The administration of US President Donald Trump has launched a global campaign against what it describes as the growing threat of transnational far-left extremism, pledging to combat the ideology with the same intensity long reserved for jihadist terrorism.

The initiative was unveiled on Thursday during a security meeting in Washington attended by representatives from more than 60 countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America. Senior administration officials argued that politically motivated violence linked to radical left-wing movements poses an emerging global security challenge requiring coordinated international action.

Speaking at the event, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said US counterterrorism efforts had historically underestimated the threat posed by violent far-left groups.

"Our counterterrorism doctrine has had a blind spot when it comes to extremist violence from the political left," Rubio said.

"Even today, the very idea that far-left terrorism could be a serious threat is treated as a right-wing fever dream."

Rubio called on partner nations to strengthen intelligence sharing and cooperation to counter what he described as an increasingly organised transnational network.

Stephen Miller, the White House homeland security adviser, accused violent left-wing groups of invoking civil liberties as a shield against law enforcement actions.

"One of the hallmarks of left-wing violence and terrorism is its completely pretextual and disingenuous appeal to civil liberties in an effort to shield its own violence," Miller said, adding that authorities must remain "completely unflinching" in pursuing what he called "enemies of civilisation."

The administration said it plans to disrupt funding channels for organisations it designates as left-wing terrorist groups, while working with international partners to dismantle their alleged safe havens, propaganda networks and cross-border operations.

The announcement, however, drew immediate criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who argued that the administration's focus on left-wing extremism while omitting any reference to far-right violence reflected a partisan approach to national security.

The Trump administration has maintained that violent extremism, regardless of its ideological justification, should be confronted through coordinated international action, but insists that far-left violence has not received sufficient attention in previous counterterrorism strategies.
