Governor Uba Sani has flagged off the Greening Schools and Climate Change Education Intervention (GSCCEI), a programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and climate change education in 276 public basic schools across Kaduna State.

The initiative, to be implemented in schools across the state's 23 local government areas, is a partnership between the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The programme seeks to create greener and safer learning environments while equipping pupils with practical knowledge on climate change, environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Sani, represented by his Honorary Adviser on Domestic Affairs, Isa Lawal, said climate education had become critical in preparing younger generations to tackle environmental challenges.

He described education as a powerful tool for building climate resilience, adding that exposing children to environmental protection practices from an early age would help nurture responsible citizens committed to safeguarding the environment.

The governor urged schools, communities, development partners and other stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure its success.

According to him, collective efforts are needed to build a more environmentally conscious and sustainable Kaduna State.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of KADSUBEB, Mubarak Mohammed, called on school administrators, teachers, pupils and host communities to take ownership of the programme by protecting and nurturing the trees to be planted in their schools.

He said the long-term success of the intervention would depend on sustained commitment from all stakeholders.

Mohammed added that beyond beautifying school environments, the initiative would improve the health and well-being of learners while instilling environmental responsibility in them.

The Greening Schools and Climate Change Education Intervention forms part of the Kaduna State Government's efforts to improve basic education and promote climate resilience through environmental awareness among schoolchildren.
