"The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation," the President said.
President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of Nigeria's Armed Forces in what the Presidency describes as a major boost to troop welfare amid ongoing security operations across the country.
The new pay structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel and raise the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
According to a State House statement issued on Tuesday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of colonel—including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from private to staff sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The Presidency said the salary review reflects the administration's commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel who continue to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's resolve to prioritise the welfare of servicemen and women while strengthening the Armed Forces through improved access to modern weapons, equipment and technology.
"The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation," the President said.
He added that national security remains central to his administration's agenda, stressing that no country can attain sustainable development without a secure environment.
Tinubu also urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government's appreciation for their sacrifices and dedication to protecting the nation.
"We remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians," he said. "Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation."
