As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 Kaduna State governorship election, Governor Uba Sani’s choice of Jerry Adams as his running mate has introduced a new dimension into the political calculations across the state.
The emergence of Adams, the Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), is being viewed by political observers as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC), expanding its electoral reach and reinforcing the governor’s message of inclusion, fairness and unity.
Beyond the selection of a deputy governorship candidate, the decision signals a shift in the political direction of the ruling party ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested election.
For many stakeholders, the “Adams Factor” represents a combination of professional competence, grassroots acceptance and cross-community appeal that could significantly influence the APC’s fortunes in 2027.
The nomination also marks a departure from the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the APC in the 2019 governorship election under former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a decision that generated widespread debate and controversy among political and religious stakeholders across Kaduna State.
Kaduna, with its diverse religious and ethnic composition, has over the years witnessed intense conversations around inclusion, representation and power-sharing.
Many stakeholders have consistently argued that political leadership should reflect the diversity of the state to promote trust and strengthen unity among its people.
Governor Sani’s decision to select a Christian running mate has therefore been interpreted by many observers as an attempt to address concerns over representation while consolidating his administration’s message of building a more inclusive Kaduna.
Announcing Adams’ nomination, Governor Sani said the decision was guided by the principles of inclusion, justice, fairness and equity.
He stressed that Kaduna’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a source of division, adding that every citizen deserves a sense of belonging irrespective of religious, ethnic or geographical background.
The governor described Adams as an accomplished public servant, an outstanding tax administrator and an institution builder whose leadership at KADIRS had strengthened the state’s revenue system.
Before his emergence as a major political figure ahead of 2027, Jerry Adams had built a reputation as a technocrat with extensive experience in taxation, accounting and public administration.
As Chairman of KADIRS, Adams has been credited by supporters with driving reforms aimed at improving internally generated revenue, strengthening institutional efficiency and promoting transparency in the state’s tax administration.
His supporters argue that his leadership style, characterised by humility, professionalism and accessibility, has enabled him to build relationships across political, religious and social divides.
Unlike politicians whose influence is built mainly through partisan activities, Adams’ public profile has largely been shaped by his administrative record, personal integrity and grassroots interactions.
Political observers believe these qualities could provide the APC with a significant advantage as it seeks to consolidate support across Kaduna’s 23 local government areas.
One of the major factors behind Adams’ emergence is believed to be his connection with Southern Kaduna, a region that remains critical to the political equation of the state.
The region, which has traditionally leaned towards opposition parties, has continued to attract attention from political actors seeking broader support ahead of the 2027 election.
Commentators believe Adams’ nomination could help the APC strengthen its presence in the area by providing a candidate with acceptance beyond traditional party lines.
Speaking with Angle360, a stakeholder of the party, Bldr. Aaron Daniel, described Adams as “a seasoned grassroots politician with a proven track record of loyalty, competence and public service.”
According to him, Adams’ influence extends beyond partisan politics, particularly among young people in Southern Kaduna.
“His influence cuts across party lines, particularly among the youth in Southern Kaduna.
He is a valuable political asset who can galvanise massive support for Governor Uba Sani, President Bola Tinubu and the APC in general,” Aaron said.
The Executive Chairman of Jaba Local Government Area, Larai Sylvia Ishaku, described Adams’ nomination as one of the best strategic decisions taken by the ruling party ahead of the 2027 election.
Ishaku said Adams’ emergence had addressed concerns and anxieties among some party stakeholders who had been closely watching the direction of the party’s choice of running mate.
According to her, the decision would further strengthen the APC’s political base, particularly in Southern Kaduna, where the party has continued to seek greater acceptance and support.
She noted that Adams’ reputation, experience and relationships across different communities positioned him as a candidate capable of bridging political divides and attracting support beyond traditional party structures.
“Jerry Adams’ choice is a welcome development. It demonstrates the party’s commitment to inclusion, competence and fairness. His emergence has given many stakeholders renewed confidence and will further consolidate the APC’s presence across Southern Kaduna,” she said.
Political analyst Mavis Akau also described Adams’ nomination as a carefully calculated political decision.
He said the choice went beyond youth representation, noting that several factors must be considered when developing an election strategy.
“Jerry Adams’ nomination goes beyond youth advocacy. When strategising to win an election, several variables must be considered. The picture is clearer now,” Akau said.
Describing Adams as a young, vibrant and disciplined politician, Akau said his humility and inclusive approach had earned him goodwill among different segments of society.
“Jerry is a friend and a capable person. We will all rally round and ensure the party succeeds,” he added.
Similarly, Mrs. Belinda Istifanus said Adams had consistently demonstrated commitment to regional development and statewide cohesion.
“His popularity in Southern Kaduna cannot be overstated. Appointing him signals that the APC values loyalty, strategic foresight and results,” she said.
Adding his voice to the reactions, the Special Adviser to the Kaduna State Governor on Vigilante and Local Security Coordination, Yusuf Usman Garba, described Adams’ nomination as a balanced and strategic decision.
Garba said Adams had contributed immensely to the growth of the APC in Kaduna State and possessed the capacity to attract more supporters to the party ahead of the 2027 election.
According to him, Adams’ emergence came at the right time, considering his years of commitment, loyalty and contribution to the party.
“Jerry Adams is the right choice at the right time. He has worked tirelessly for the progress of the party and has the ability to bring more supporters into the APC fold,” Garba said.
He added that the decision demonstrated Governor Sani’s political foresight and understanding of the need for a ticket capable of uniting different sections of the state.
The nomination of Adams is also being viewed against the backdrop of the APC’s performance during the 2023 governorship election, particularly in Southern Kaduna where the party struggled to secure significant support.
An APC source familiar with the party’s strategy told our Correspondent that Adams’ emergence could provide an opportunity to rebuild trust and expand the party’s influence in the region.
“In 2023, Governor Uba Sani lost most Southern Kaduna votes to the Peoples Democratic Party. With Jerry Adams on the ticket, there is a real opportunity to rebuild confidence and secure a stronger foothold in the region,” the source said.
For the APC, the calculation appears to be built around combining Governor Sani’s incumbency advantage with Adams’ professional reputation, grassroots acceptance and cross-community appeal.
The party hopes the combination will strengthen its appeal among voters who prioritise inclusion, competence and effective governance.
Despite the optimism surrounding Adams’ nomination, political analysts acknowledge that elections are influenced by several factors, including voter sentiment, economic realities, security, party organisation and campaign strategy.
For Adams, the transition from a technocratic position into frontline politics presents a new challenge.
He will need to translate his professional achievements and public goodwill into grassroots mobilisation and electoral support.
Opposition parties are also expected to challenge the APC’s record and scrutinise the performance of the administration ahead of the election.
However, one thing is clear: Jerry Adams has already become one of the major factors shaping Kaduna’s 2027 political conversation.
His emergence has shifted discussions from only issues of representation to broader questions of competence, inclusion and political strategy.
Whether the “Adams Factor” becomes the decisive element that delivers victory for Governor Uba Sani in 2027 will ultimately be determined by Kaduna voters.
But ahead of the election, the choice of Jerry Adams remains one of the most significant political calculations shaping the future of Kaduna State.
