Sultan Denies Backing Tinubu's 2027 Re-election

The Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports claiming the revered monarch endorsed President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Sultan's media office described the report circulating on social media as false and misleading, insisting that the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, does not support or endorse any political candidate.

The statement, signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka for the Sultan's Media Team, said it was impossible for the Sultan to publicly or privately campaign for any aspirant, urging Nigerians to disregard what it described as a malicious attempt to drag the monarch into partisan politics.

"Let it be made clear once again that the institutions of monarchy and religion led by the Sultan are institutions of a father figure. As such, His Eminence cannot but remain within the purview of that role by offering fatherly, royal and spiritual blessings, as well as guidance, to Nigerian politicians who seek his counsel and blessings," the statement said.

It added that the Sultan's palace remains open to all Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, stressing that his interactions with political leaders should not be misconstrued as an endorsement of any individual or political party.

The media team further urged the public to reject attempts to associate the Sultan with any campaign or candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It reaffirmed that the Sultan remains committed to promoting peace, national unity, stability and harmonious coexistence across Nigeria's diverse religious and ethnic communities.

The statement also called on journalists and social media users to verify information before publication or circulation, warning against reports capable of misleading the public or dragging respected traditional and religious institutions into political controversies.
