The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the captivity of suspected bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu'azu, who disclosed that the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
According to the statement, "The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension."
The state government noted that concerted efforts had been made by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda's administration and security agencies to secure the release of the retired officer before the unfortunate development occurred.
Governor Radda expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former military officer, describing it as a dark moment for Katsina State. He said the incident underscored the urgent need to intensify efforts against criminal elements threatening peace and security across the state and other parts of the country.
The governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are apprehended and brought to justice.
He also assured residents that the state government remains resolute in its determination to combat banditry and safeguard lives and property throughout Katsina State.
The government further extended its condolences to the bereaved family, prayed for the peaceful repose of the late major general's soul, and urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity.
Major General Abubakar and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were reportedly ambushed and abducted by suspected armed bandits on May 30, 2026, while travelling in a Peugeot 406 near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Their driver survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot injuries.
