Portable Challenges EFCC Invitation Over Alleged Naira Abuse, Says He Will Respond Through Lawyer

Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has reacted to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of naira abuse linked to his son's naming ceremony held in May.

The singer confirmed receiving the invitation in a series of videos shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, although the EFCC has yet to publicly release the invitation letter.

According to Portable, the anti-graft agency invited him for questioning over activities that allegedly involved the abuse of the naira during the ceremony. However, he said he would initially be represented by his lawyer.

The singer explained that his lawyer advised against an immediate appearance, citing concerns about the country's security situation and prevailing social challenges.

“I am not running from the EFCC,” Portable said in one of the videos. “I have spoken with my lawyer, and he advised that he would respond on my behalf for now. We intend to honour the invitation at the appropriate time.”

Portable also criticised the invitation, describing it as unnecessary at a time when the country is grappling with insecurity and economic hardship. He argued that law enforcement agencies should focus more attention on violent crimes and other pressing national issues.

The musician further questioned what he described as the selective enforcement of laws relating to naira abuse, citing previous incidents involving other public figures. He maintained that he had committed no financial crime and insisted that his earnings were generated through his music career.

“I am not involved in fraud, theft or money laundering,” he said. “I have worked hard for my success, both in Nigeria and abroad.”

Portable also appealed for fairness in the application of the law, stressing that he should not be treated like a criminal over the allegations.

The EFCC has not yet issued an official response to the singer’s claims.
