Pastor Warns Christians Against Prophecy-Driven Faith

“Not every voice behind a pulpit is God-sent,” he said, stressing that genuine pastors and prophets should lead people to Christ rather than build personalities and followership around themselves.

Apostle Yusuf Yakubu, Senior Pastor of House of Purpose Ministry, Kaduna, has cautioned Christians against becoming so consumed by prophecies, miracles and popular religious figures that they neglect the Word of God.

Yakubu gave the warning during a Sunday sermon titled “Understanding Your God-Ordained Pastor or Prophet,” urging believers across the country to exercise greater discernment in choosing spiritual leaders and responding to prophetic messages.

He said the growing search for quick answers to personal problems was driving some Christians from one church to another in pursuit of prophecies, miracles and instant solutions.

According to him, such desperation could leave vulnerable believers open to manipulation, exploitation and teachings that lack sound biblical foundation.

“Many chase after pastors and prophecies for quick answers. But if you don’t know the Word, any voice can deceive you,” Yakubu warned.

Drawing lessons from Jeremiah 3:15, 2 Chronicles 20:20, Hosea 12:13, 1 Corinthians 4:15, Ephesians 4:11-12 and Amos 3:7, the cleric said genuine spiritual leadership must be rooted in Scripture, godly character and a sincere commitment to serving believers.

He identified the ability to recognise a God-ordained pastor or prophet, the character of such a leader and the evidence of genuine spiritual leadership as key areas Christians should consider before submitting themselves to religious authority.

“Not every voice behind a pulpit is God-sent,” he said, stressing that genuine pastors and prophets should lead people to Christ rather than build personalities and followership around themselves.

“He does not draw you to himself. He points you to Christ. He feeds you, corrects you and equips you for ministry,” Yakubu added.

The pastor also challenged Christians to look beyond dramatic miracles and prophetic declarations when assessing spiritual leaders.

“You will recognise your pastor by the fruit of discipleship, not just by miracles,” he said.

Yakubu warned that prophetic messages should never be allowed to replace Scripture, insisting that believers must test every message against the teachings of the Bible.

He said a genuine spiritual leader should provide stability, spiritual growth and godly direction rather than operate through fear, intimidation or manipulation.

“A true shepherd will not flee when the wolf comes. He will feed you, guard you and prepare you for destiny,” he said.

Beyond the church, Yakubu urged Christians to play a more constructive role in Nigeria’s development by praying for the nation’s leaders and promoting truth, integrity and responsible citizenship.

He cautioned against an excessive focus on political prophecies, saying the Church also has a responsibility to raise citizens capable of positively influencing society.

According to him, Christians who lack a strong foundation in Scripture may become easily swayed by religious claims as well as political and economic developments.

“The Word of God is the anchor. Prophecy is the light. Both must work together,” Yakubu said.

He urged believers to deepen their knowledge of the Bible, cultivate discernment and remain committed to obedience and spiritual growth.

The service ended with prayers for Nigeria, Kaduna State and Christians to remain grounded in Scripture while exercising wisdom in identifying and following genuine spiritual leadership.
