NRS Gives Large Companies Until July 31 to Comply With Mandatory E-Invoicing, Warns of Sanctions
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has directed all large companies to fully comply with the national electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) and Electronic Fiscal System (EFS) by July 31, warning that defaulters risk regulatory and enforcement actions under existing tax laws.
The deadline was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by Dare Adekanmbi, special adviser on media to Zacch Adedeji, chairman of the NRS.
According to the agency, compliance monitoring has already begun to assess the level of adherence among large taxpayers as the deadline approaches.
"Any defaulting taxpayer may be subjected to appropriate regulatory and enforcement actions in accordance with the provisions of the relevant tax laws and regulations," the statement said.
The NRS urged affected companies to immediately complete all outstanding onboarding and system integration processes and begin transmitting invoices through the national e-invoicing platform before the deadline.
The agency said it remains committed to supporting taxpayers to ensure the successful implementation of the e-invoicing regime.
Large taxpayers are defined as companies with an annual gross turnover of at least N5 billion. The NRS said more than 1,000 such companies had complied with the directive as of the first quarter of the year.
To meet the compliance requirements, taxpayers must complete onboarding on the NRS Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS), integrate their systems through approved Access Point Providers (APPs) or Systems Integrators (SIs), complete all validation and testing processes, and actively transmit invoices to the NRS e-invoicing platform in line with prescribed standards.
They are also required to ensure they receive only compliant electronic invoices bearing valid Invoice Reference Numbers (RINs) from their suppliers.
The national e-invoicing platform became operational for large taxpayers on August 1, 2025, following months of stakeholder consultations. Although implementation was initially scheduled to begin then, the rollout deadline was later extended to November 2025 to accommodate operational and transitional challenges.
In February, the NRS announced the next phase of the initiative, extending the electronic invoicing and fiscal system to medium-sized and emerging taxpayers as part of its broader tax administration reforms.
