Nollywood Stars Turn Out in White to Honor Late Actor Alexx Ekubo at Emotional Service of Songs

On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the Nigerian entertainment industry came together in a poignant display of love and respect as family, friends, colleagues, and fans gathered at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki for the Service of Songs honoring the late Nollywood actor Alexx Ikenna Ekubo Okwaraeke.

Dressed predominantly in white – a symbol of peace, light, and purity – attendees filled the venue to celebrate the life of the charismatic 40-year-old actor, who passed away on May 11, 2026, after a brief but courageous battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer. The service, held from approximately 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, featured heartfelt tributes, songs, prayers, and shared memories that highlighted Ekubo’s enduring impact on Nollywood and beyond.

Alexx Ekubo, born on April 10, 1986, was a beloved figure in the Nigerian film industry. A University of Calabar law graduate and runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant, he stood out with his towering 6’2” frame, multilingual abilities, charming smile, and versatile acting skills. He charmed audiences particularly in romantic comedies and left a mark through his film roles and humanitarian efforts.

His family kept his health struggles largely private until his passing at a Lagos hospital. The news sent shockwaves through the industry, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues who remembered his vibrant personality and professional dedication.

The Service of Songs saw a strong turnout from Nollywood heavyweights and entertainment personalities. Among those present were:

•  Kate Henshaw, who has been vocal in her grief since the news broke.

•  Nkechi Blessing.

•  Dayo Amusa.

•  J Martins, Ebuka, and Bambam, alongside many other colleagues and associates.

Videos and photos circulating from the event captured emotional moments: stars sharing stories, singing hymns, and paying respects under soft lighting. The atmosphere blended sorrow with celebration of a life well-lived, as friends and fans reflected on Ekubo’s legacy of joy, talent, and kindness.

One attendee’s post captured the sentiment: colleagues gathered to honor a man whose “smile still lives on,” echoing broader tributes from figures like Yemi Alade.

The Service of Songs marks the beginning of final rites. A Wake Keep is scheduled for June 17, 2026, at the Ekubo family home in Arochukwu, Abia State, followed by the burial on June 18, 2026.

As the industry mourns, Alexx Ekubo’s contributions to Nollywood and his vibrant spirit continue to inspire. His passing is a reminder of the fragility of life, even as his light endures through the films he starred in and the memories he created.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
