Navy at 70: Defence Minister Hails Navy's Role in Securing Blue Economy

The Minister of Defence has commended the Nigerian Navy for its significant contributions to safeguarding Nigeria's maritime domain and driving the growth of the nation's blue economy, reaffirming the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening the Service's operational capabilities.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday in Lagos while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night, the grand finale of activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy's seven decades of service to the nation.

He said the Federal Government remained committed to providing the Nigerian Navy with the resources, capabilities and enabling environment required to build a technologically advanced and globally respected naval force capable of effectively protecting Nigeria's maritime interests.

The minister emphasised the need for innovation and modern technology in addressing emerging maritime security threats, noting that the future of naval operations would depend on advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, cyber defence tools, unmanned technologies and data-driven operational platforms.

According to him, a technology-driven Navy would enhance maritime domain awareness, improve operational effectiveness and strengthen collective security efforts within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.

He congratulated the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings and civilian personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their achievements over the past 70 years, describing the Service as a model of professionalism, discipline, resilience and organisational excellence.

The minister also acknowledged the contributions of Nigeria's international partners, commending their continued cooperation in promoting maritime security and regional stability.

Highlighting the Navy's role in national development, he said its operations had made a profound impact on Nigeria's blue economy through the protection of strategic sea routes, offshore oil and gas facilities and other critical maritime assets.

He noted that the Navy had remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes that threaten economic prosperity.

"The Nigerian Navy's contributions extend beyond maritime security. Through its active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, it has played a vital role in maintaining peace, stability and the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development," he said.

The minister added that the Navy's efforts had strengthened Nigeria's sovereignty, enhanced investor confidence, facilitated trade and commerce, and positioned the country to fully harness the vast opportunities within its maritime sector.

He further congratulated officers and ratings who received awards and special recognition during the event, including personnel honoured posthumously for their exemplary service and sacrifice.

The ceremony featured the traditional Ceremonial Sunset, a cherished naval custom symbolising duty, honour, discipline and the continuous vigilance required in naval service.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the event provided an opportunity to reflect on seven decades of dedication, sacrifice and professionalism by the Nigerian Navy in defending Nigeria's maritime domain and supporting national development.
