Of the 68 successful candidates, 67 were recognised under the advocates' category, while Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri emerged as the sole academic appointee.

The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), with Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Sulyman Ibrahim, making the prestigious list.

The decision was reached at the LPPC's 174th plenary session held on Thursday and chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, according to a statement issued by the committee's secretary and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi.

The SAN rank is Nigeria's highest professional distinction for lawyers and is conferred on legal practitioners who have demonstrated outstanding excellence either in courtroom advocacy or through significant contributions to legal scholarship.

Of the 68 successful candidates, 67 were recognised under the advocates' category, while Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri emerged as the sole academic appointee.

The LPPC said all successful candidates must attend and complete the mandatory pre-swearing-in induction programme organised by the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), stressing that participation is a prerequisite for the formal conferment of the rank.

The committee also cautioned the successful nominees against publishing or encouraging congratulatory advertisements, goodwill messages or promotional materials relating to their elevation.

It said the directive is in line with Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023, warning that violations could attract disciplinary sanctions.

The new Senior Advocates of Nigeria will be formally sworn in on October 12, 2026.
