Kaduna Police condemn mob killing, arrest suspects over woman’s death in Maraban Jos

The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the mob killing of a woman accused of child theft in Maraban Jos area of the state, describing the incident as criminal and unacceptable.

The command said the incident occurred on Sunday, June 21, when a crowd allegedly attacked the woman over claims of child stealing without evidence.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mansir Hassan, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10 a.m. and immediately mobilised officers to the scene.

The statement said the officers rescued the woman from the mob and took her to the police station for her safety and further investigation.

However, the situation later escalated as hundreds of people reportedly stormed the station, overpowered officers on duty and forcibly took the woman from custody.

“The mob subsequently killed the victim and set her body ablaze,” the statement said.

Police said the deceased was a native of Maraban Jos.

The command described the action as barbaric and a direct attack on the rule of law, stressing that no individual or group had the right to take the law into their own hands.

It disclosed that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other persons involved.

Police added that a full-scale investigation had commenced and assured that all those found culpable would be prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Rabiu Muhammad, warned against jungle justice and attacks on security formations, saying the command would not tolerate such acts.

He urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies and allow due process to take its course.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring justice in line with the law.
