An Anambra State High Court sitting in Ogidi has sentenced two men, Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu, to death by hanging for the rape and murder of Jennifer Anene, a 17-year-old girl, bringing to a close a trial over a crime committed nearly six years ago.

Delivering judgment, Justice U.I. Ndigwe held that the prosecution established beyond reasonable doubt the three-count charge of conspiracy, rape and murder against the defendants, warranting the maximum penalty prescribed by law.

The court heard that the offence occurred on November 25, 2020, when the teenager, who was reported to have a mental impairment, was sexually assaulted before she was left fatally injured.

Medical evidence tendered during the trial showed that the victim suffered severe physical injuries, including vaginal tears and multiple bruises, findings that prosecutors said were consistent with a violent sexual assault. She was later returned unconscious to the residence of a mutual acquaintance and rushed to a hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead on arrival.

In his judgment, Justice Ndigwe described the crime as "heinous" and "despicable," saying it represented a gross violation of human dignity and societal values. He ruled that the evidence before the court overwhelmingly established the guilt of the two defendants and sentenced both men to death by hanging.

The prosecution, led by Florence Abadom-Igweike, Principal State Counsel in the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, secured the conviction in Suit No. HID/23C/2021 after a protracted trial.

The verdict has been welcomed by advocates for women's and children's rights, who described it as a significant step in the fight against sexual violence and in ensuring justice for vulnerable victims.
