The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off in spectacular fashion at the iconic Estadio Azteca, where Colombian icon Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy headlined a vibrant opening ceremony, performing their collaborative anthem “Dai Dai” to a roaring crowd just 90 minutes before the host nation Mexico faced South Africa.
The performance marked a historic fusion of Latin and African rhythms, perfectly encapsulating the tournament’s theme of unity across the North American hosts — Canada, Mexico, and the United States. “Dai Dai,” released in mid-May as the official FIFA World Cup 2026 song, blends reggaeton, Afrobeats, and infectious pop beats, quickly climbing charts and amassing over 115 million views for its music video featuring football legends like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

The ceremony, steeped in Mexican traditions with elements like colorful papel picado and folkloric artistry, featured a star-studded lineup including J Balvin, Tyla, Belinda, Maná, Alejandro Fernández, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, and Los Ángeles Azules. Salma Hayek Pinault served as a special FIFA Ambassador.
Shakira, a four-time Grammy winner and longtime World Cup staple (famously performing at the 2010 and 2014 editions), delivered her signature high-energy moves alongside Burna Boy’s charismatic stage presence. Their live rendition of “Dai Dai” electrified the stadium, blending Shakira’s sultry vocals with Burna Boy’s rhythmic flows in a powerful display of cross-cultural collaboration.
FIFA officials highlighted the song’s role in supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, aiming to raise $100 million for youth education and access to soccer worldwide.
This marks the first time the FIFA World Cup features matches across three host countries, with 48 teams competing in 104 matches from June 11 to July 19. The opening ceremony in Mexico City sets the tone for celebrations in other venues, including additional performances in the United States and Canada.
Fans and critics alike praised the duo’s chemistry. “Shakira and Burna Boy represent the best of global music — vibrant, unifying, and full of joy,” one FIFA statement noted. Social media erupted with excitement, with clips of the performance trending worldwide within minutes.
Burna Boy, often called the “African Giant,” brought his signature Afrofusion energy, while Shakira continued her legacy as the “Queen of the World Cup.” Their partnership not only celebrates football but also bridges continents and cultures at the biggest sporting event on the planet.
