FG Launches Training for 5,000 Youths to Bridge Metering Gap

The Federal Government has launched a new programme to train and certify 5,000 Nigerian youths as meter installers and technicians in a move aimed at addressing the country's metering deficit while creating employment opportunities in the power sector.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced the initiative in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, describing it as part of the government's broader strategy to expand economic opportunities for young Nigerians.

According to the minister, the programme is designed to build a skilled workforce that will improve efficiency across Nigeria's energy sector while equipping participants with industry-recognised certification.

Olawande said the initiative complements other youth-focused interventions of the Federal Government, including the expansion of the YouthCred scheme, which he said has provided an additional one million young Nigerians with access to affordable credit for education and entrepreneurship.

He added that the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA) continues to equip youths with digital and employability skills, while its StartUp programme offers funding and mentorship to young entrepreneurs to transform innovative ideas into sustainable businesses.

The minister also highlighted the Youth in AgriBusiness Land Trust Fund, which he said is providing young people with access to land and support to establish profitable agribusiness ventures.

"Today, we have created another pathway in the energy sector to prepare a new generation of skilled professionals for meaningful employment," Olawande said.

He urged young Nigerians to enrol in the programme and other government initiatives, encouraging them to complete the training, obtain certification and take advantage of the opportunities available.
