The Federal Government has flagged off the reconstruction of the 122.8-kilometre Mando-Birnin Gwari Road in Kaduna State, a N178.1 billion project aimed at improving security, boosting economic activities and easing movement along one of the country's critical highway corridors.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the flag-off ceremony in Kaduna on Tuesday, said the road project underscores his administration's commitment to delivering critical infrastructure that will improve the lives of Nigerians.

Tinubu said the road, which stretches from Mando near Kaduna Airport to the Niger State boundary, would strengthen connectivity between the North-West and the South-West while facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce and other goods.

He recalled that the reconstruction of the road was one of the promises he made during the 2022 election campaign, adding that the commencement of work demonstrates his administration's resolve to fulfil its commitments.

According to the president, the road had been neglected for decades despite its strategic importance to commerce, agriculture and national security.

He said Kaduna's position as the gateway to Northern Nigeria makes investment in modern transport infrastructure crucial for economic growth and regional integration.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, said the project reflects the Federal Government's determination to provide infrastructure capable of transforming communities and supporting economic development.

Umahi said the reconstruction would improve security along the corridor, enhance access to farming communities and unlock the area's vast agricultural potential.

He expressed optimism that ongoing economic reforms by the Tinubu administration would continue to yield positive results despite the challenges inherited by the government.

"The president is fulfilling his promise to the people. This project will also stimulate agricultural activities and contribute to improved food production," Umahi said.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works, Adeladan Rafiu Olarinre, said the project forms part of the government's broader efforts to modernise Nigeria's road network and improve connectivity across the country.

He said the road, when completed, would reduce travel time, facilitate trade and support socio-economic development in Kaduna State and neighbouring communities.
