El-Rufai's Family Accuses ICPC of Denying Him Urgent Medical Care Despite Court Order

ABUJA, June 5, 2026 – The family of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of denying him access to medical treatment despite concerns over his deteriorating eye condition and an existing court order permitting him to receive healthcare.
In a statement issued on Friday by Muyiwa Adekeye, the family alleged that El-Rufai complained of severe discomfort caused by swollen, reddened, and itchy eyes while in ICPC custody.
According to the statement, family members alerted ICPC officials to his condition and requested that he be allowed to see a doctor. Two officials reportedly examined El-Rufai's eyes, raising expectations that he would either be taken to a hospital or attended to by a medical professional.
However, the family claimed that no medical attention was subsequently provided. The statement further alleged that an ICPC official identified only as Henry, said to have been seconded from another agency, falsely informed a family member that El-Rufai had declined medical care.
The family described the claim as "false, insensitive and absurd," adding that it was not the first time officials had allegedly attributed statements to El-Rufai that he did not make.
The statement noted that El-Rufai had been taken to an eye clinic on Thursday, June 4, but his condition reportedly worsened overnight, causing significant discomfort and concern among relatives who visited him on Friday.
It added that persistent concerns about his health while in custody had prompted his legal team to secure a court order granting him access to his doctors and necessary medical treatment.
"Despite this, the ICPC persists in treating him as if he is without rights and is undeserving of a duty of care while in their custody," the statement said.
The family urged the anti-corruption agency to comply with the court order, respect the rights of individuals in its custody, and ensure El-Rufai receives appropriate medical attention.
The ICPC had not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
