Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court in Kaduna as proceedings resumed in the corruption case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai arrived at the court premises under tight security, accompanied by legal representatives, while officials of the anti-graft agency and security personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force were also present.
At Monday’s sitting, the court was expected to entertain arguments and applications brought by both the prosecution and defence teams as the matter advances into another stage of hearing.
The ICPC had instituted the case over allegations bordering on abuse of office, financial misconduct and breaches of procurement procedures during El-Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State.
According to investigators, some public projects executed under the former governor’s tenure are being scrutinised over claims that government funds were either improperly disbursed, not fully accounted for, or allegedly spent in violation of established processes.
The anti-corruption agency maintains that its investigation uncovered transactions and project implementation issues requiring judicial determination.
However, El-Rufai has denied all allegations against him and insists that all projects undertaken during his administration followed due process and were executed in line with government regulations.
His legal team has also argued that the charges are unfounded and pledged to vigorously challenge the allegations in court.
The case has continued to attract public attention because of El-Rufai’s prominence in national politics and his eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023.
Observers say the outcome of the trial may contribute to ongoing national conversations on accountability, public procurement and anti-corruption efforts in governance.
The court adjourned further proceedings to a later date to continue hearing applications and arguments from both parties.
