A dismissed police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, and members of his team have been remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre in Delta State over the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect, Mene Ogidi.
The officers were remanded on Monday, June 1, following their arraignment in connection with the incident, which sparked widespread public outrage after a video of the shooting circulated online.
Details of the charges brought against the defendants were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
The Inspector-General of Police had earlier approved the dismissal and prosecution of Usman and other officers implicated in the incident.
Ogidi was shot dead on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to police accounts, the deceased was arrested while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Operatives were said to have acted on intelligence provided by members of the public.
However, controversy erupted after a viral video showed Ogidi handcuffed and pleading for his life moments before he was shot.
Usman, who was attached to the Effurun Area Command and reportedly led the operation, was accused of acting in violation of established police procedures.
Before the shooting, Ogidi was heard in the video offering to take officers to a location in Sapele, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
There were also allegations that the suspect may have been killed because he possessed sensitive information relating to Usman's previous operations in the Jesse and Sapele areas. Authorities have yet to confirm those claims.
The case has drawn significant public attention and renewed calls for accountability and adherence to due process by law enforcement personnel.
