Defense Minister Hails DSS for Expanding Security Role Through Education

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has praised the Department of State Services for broadening its contribution to national security through educational interventions, describing the approach as critical to addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Musa spoke on Sunday at the commissioning of the Kaduna Christian Academy in Ungwan Sunday, Sabon Tasha, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The academy was constructed by the DSS in collaboration with Nest Global Resources, Dan Oil Exploration Limited and Tantina Security Services.

Speaking at the event, the Defence Minister said modern security challenges require more than military and intelligence operations, noting that education remains a vital tool in preventing radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism.

He described Nigeria's security situation as an asymmetric conflict in which criminal and extremist groups often exploit ignorance, poverty and hopelessness to recruit followers.

According to him, investments in education are essential to building resilient communities and securing long-term peace.

"As Minister of Defence, I view this school as a critical military asset without a single rifle. True and lasting security is anchored on the defeat of ignorance and the conquest of hopelessness," Musa said.

The minister noted that the commissioning of the school reflected the growing role of security institutions in promoting community development and strengthening public trust.

He commended the DSS for complementing its traditional mandate with initiatives that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

"We see the DSS in a different light—as builders of the future. By constructing this academy, the Service has shown that internal security is not just about surveillance and arrest. It is about winning the confidence of the people," he stated.

Musa recalled that the DSS had previously built a school for the Muslim community in Danbushiya, also in Chikun Local Government Area, saying both projects underscored the agency's commitment to inclusive development and social cohesion.

He urged residents of Ungwan Sunday to take ownership of the facility and protect it, while charging teachers and administrators to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism.

The minister further described the academy as a symbol of interfaith harmony and a bridge between security operations and community development.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, represented by the Commissioner for Justice, Mr James Kanyip, welcomed the initiative and pledged continued collaboration between the state government, security agencies and private-sector partners in advancing education and development.

The event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders and members of the host community.
