Popular Nigerian comedian, actor, and filmmaker Ayo Makun, better known as AY, has opened up about why he stopped attending church for a period, sharing a reflective and thought-provoking message that has sparked conversations online.
In a video posted on his Instagram page on July 26, 2026, AY explained that his decision was not due to a loss of faith in God. Instead, it came during a difficult personal season marked by negative narratives circulating about him on blogs and social media. He chose to step back quietly while navigating that challenging time.
AY later found a new church where he initially felt welcomed by the pastor, the pastor’s family, and members of the leadership. At some point, he was invited to participate in an upcoming church programme. However, after internal discussions, the invitation was withdrawn because of concerns about public perception surrounding him.
“I respected the decision, but I left with a question. When did public opinion become stronger than one’s relationship with the altar and faith?” AY said.
The experience left him questioning the true role of the church. He stressed that whether the stories about him were true or false, the church ought to be a place of grace, truth, and restoration. Reaffirming his Christian faith, he referenced Jesus’ invitation to the weary and burdened, noting that Christ did not say “come after everyone has accepted your story,” but simply “come.” He also cited the Bible’s teaching that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
AY concluded his message by posing a broader question for reflection: “Who is the church really for?”
