Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has officially stepped into the world of big-screen fantasy. On July 27, 2026, Paramount Pictures released the first official teaser for Children of Blood & Bone, offering audiences their initial glimpse of Starr in character alongside a powerhouse international cast.
The short behind-the-scenes featurette captures the vibrant energy of the production, which was filmed primarily in South Africa and draws heavily on West African cultural influences. Colorful costumes, energetic dance sequences, and scenes of the cast training and preparing on set fill the clip. Starr appears among the ensemble, marking a major milestone as she moves from chart-topping music into Hollywood acting. The featurette is scored in part by Tems’ track “Me & U,” adding another layer of Nigerian star power to the project.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, The Old Guard) and co-written by Prince-Bythewood and author Tomi Adeyemi, the film adapts Adeyemi’s bestselling 2018 young-adult fantasy novel, the first in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy. Set in the kingdom of Orïsha, the story follows Zélie Adebola (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman who embarks on a dangerous quest to restore the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She joins forces with her brother Tzain (Tosin Cole) and the children of the ruthless king, Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Damson Idris), to challenge the monarchy’s brutal rule.
The ensemble is packed with acclaimed talent. Viola Davis plays the sage Mama Agba, Idris Elba portrays the sacred high priest Lekan, Regina King is Queen Nehanda, Chiwetel Ejiofor is King Saran, and Cynthia Erivo appears as Commander Kaea. Additional cast members include Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Saniyya Sidney, Bukky Bakray, and fellow Nigerian performers Shamz Garuba, Kola Bodunde, and others. Starr’s specific character has not yet been detailed in official materials, but her inclusion underscores the production’s commitment to authentic African representation.
Already a global music force known for her hits and distinctive style, Ayra Starr joins the project after earlier roles in Nigerian productions. Her casting, announced in 2025 alongside other Nollywood and Afrobeats talents, generated significant excitement among fans who see it as a bridge between African music and international cinema.
The featurette arrives just one day ahead of the full theatrical trailer, expected on July 28, 2026. Children of Blood & Bone is scheduled for exclusive theatrical release—including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and other premium formats, on January 15, 2027.
For fans of epic fantasy, African storytelling, and Ayra Starr’s expanding artistic range, this first look delivers both visual spectacle and cultural resonance. The world of Orïsha is coming to life, and Starr is part of its magic.
