At 67, Nduka Obaigbena’s Legacy Remains a Beacon for Democracy, Press Freedom — Uba Sani
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has paid glowing tribute to media entrepreneur and publisher, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, describing him as a visionary leader, pro-democracy advocate and one of the most influential figures in African journalism as he marks his 67th birthday and the 40th anniversary of the founding of THISWEEK magazine.
In a congratulatory message, the governor joined family, friends, colleagues and admirers across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating Obaigbena, whose pioneering role in the media industry has left an enduring imprint on journalism, democratic governance and public discourse.
Sani noted that the establishment of THISWEEK magazine four decades ago marked a turning point in Nigerian journalism, as the publication challenged established norms, elevated professional standards and strengthened investigative and public-interest reporting.
According to him, Obaigbena’s bold vision later gave rise to THISDAY newspaper and the ARISE Media Group, institutions that have grown into influential platforms shaping national conversations, promoting democratic engagement and amplifying African voices on the global stage.
“Forty years ago, when many were content to follow familiar paths, The Duke chose to chart a new course. With uncommon vision, courage and intellectual audacity, he founded THISWEEK, a publication that transformed the landscape of Nigerian journalism,” the governor said.
Sani described Obaigbena as more than a successful media entrepreneur, portraying him as a committed patriot, humanist and champion of democratic ideals whose contributions have extended far beyond the newsroom.
He commended the media mogul’s steadfast commitment to press freedom, accountability and good governance, noting that his unwavering belief in Nigeria and dedication to strengthening democratic institutions have earned him widespread respect within and outside the country.
The governor further praised Obaigbena’s role in mentoring generations of journalists and media professionals, saying his investment in human capital has created opportunities for countless young Nigerians and inspired a culture of excellence across the profession.
“Beyond his extraordinary professional accomplishments lies an even greater legacy—his abiding faith in people. He has nurtured talent, created opportunities and inspired many to see excellence not as an aspiration but as a responsibility,” Sani stated.
Reflecting on Obaigbena’s career, the governor described his journey as a testament to the power of visionary leadership, courage and determination, adding that enduring institutions are built by individuals willing to dream beyond conventional limits and pursue those dreams with discipline and conviction.
As Obaigbena celebrates the dual milestones, Sani prayed for continued good health, wisdom and strength for the media icon, expressing confidence that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
“Happy 67th Birthday, The Duke. May your remarkable legacy continue to inspire generations, and may your vision keep illuminating the path toward a stronger democracy, a freer press and a more prosperous Nigeria,” the governor said.
