Nigerian highlife and Afrobeats star Flavour N’abania (Chinedu Okoli) has openly shared a personal account of a two-year period in which he battled a compulsive masturbation habit, describing how it began, escalated, and eventually ended.

Speaking during a recent TikTok live session with friends, the “Nwa Baby” singer explained that the period followed the loss of his virginity at age 24. After the encounter, he lost contact with the woman involved. At the time he had no girlfriend and limited prior romantic or sexual experience. A friend then introduced him to Mapouka dance videos from Congo. Watching them at night after others in the house had gone to sleep led him into regular masturbation.

Flavour said the behaviour quickly became compulsive. He described doing it up to three times a day and resorting to soap, including the dishwashing liquid Morning Fresh as a lubricant. The habit left him feeling deep shame. He recalled struggling to interact normally with peers, including during ordinary activities such as football matches, because of the guilt and secrecy.

Seeking help, he approached his mother’s pastor, who specialised in guidance and counselling. The pastor prescribed a 21-day fast together with prayer points and Bible reading. Flavour began the fast but said the urge returned within days; he relapsed while performing with his band.

He later confided in an older Cameroonian bassist from the same group. The musician suggested the problem stemmed from youth and the absence of regular sexual activity. He took Flavour to a brothel and paid for him to have sex with a woman there. After that, Flavour began using money earned from playing instruments to visit brothels on a weekly basis. According to him, this shift helped break the masturbation addiction.

The revelations form part of a broader pattern of candid personal storytelling by Flavour, who has previously discussed remaining a virgin until 24 and focusing intensely on music during his early career as a church drummer and band member. The recent comments have circulated widely on social media, prompting a mix of reactions ranging from surprise and humour to discussions about addiction, shame, and seeking help.

Flavour did not present the account as advice or a prescription for others. He framed it as a retrospective description of a difficult chapter he eventually moved past through a combination of conversation, practical changes, and time.
